Tony Snow, R.I.P.

My condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of former White House press secretary and journalist Tony Snow who passed away this morning at the age of 53. I first met Tony nearly 20 years ago in Washington. He was editorial page editor of the Washington Times. He also appeared on a prototypical version of what many years later would become "Fox News Sunday". It was called "Off The Record." It had a younger, bouncier feel to it than the other news shows at the time.

While still at the Republican National Committee, I encountered Tony after he had become head speechwriter in the first Bush White House. Though he only briefly knew me, he was nice enought to pass along my name to a newspaper editorial page editor who was looking for an editorial writer. That particular offer didn't work out, but Tony's generosity toward a young professional starting out in DC was really impressive.

Snow was a conservative on-air journalist to emulate because he knew his stuff, stuck to his beliefs -- but didn't feel the need to belittle those with whome he disagreed. He was an essentially decent person.

Again, my thoughts and prayers to his his wife, Jill, and their three children.

Hail & Farewell

Going...
Happy trails to Sen. John Warner (R-VA), who announced his retirement today. The only possible upside for Republicans that this news might create is that it deprives Hillary Clinton of her strongest running mate: Former VA governor Mark Warner (no relation) is likely to run for the now-open seat, instead of being a vice presidential candidate. He's the odds-on favorite as of this writing.

Going...
Meanwhile, prayers for good health to White House Press Secretary Tony Snow who is leaving the job to continue his battle against cancer and spend more time with his family.

GONE?
Sen. Craig to make an announcement Saturday.

UPDATE: GONE!! Craig will indeed make it official tomorrow.

Elizabeth & Tony

What Josh says. I wish Elizabeth Edwards and Tony Snow all the best.

In the last six months, I've been to three memorial services/funerals for people who have succumbed to cancer. All were under the age of 60, two younger than 50. Writer Cathy Seipp, a non-smoker, died of
lung cancer last week at the age of 49.

As Josh said, these should be incentives to all of us to live each day to the fullest, because no one knows exactly how much time we are granted. And the Big C doesn't care if you're liberal, conservative, black, white, Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, Buddhist, male or female.
